Emu Plains railway station is located along the Main Western Line and is 57.4km from Sydney CBD.[1] It serves the suburb of Emu Plains as well as a nearby industrial area. The station consists of two side platforms, linked by a lift-accessible pedestrian bridge. Emu Plains is serviced by Blue Mountains Line trains, and also serves as the western terminus for the T1 Western Line. Two sets of points at the eastern end of the station allow westbound trains to terminate at either platform and resume eastward towards Sydney.

Emu Plains is the 121st most patronised railway station in Sydney (out of a total of 176 stations), with an average of 1720 passengers boarding per day.

History[]

Emu Plains station opened on 18 August 1868 with a single platform, following the completion of the Main Western railway line in the previous year.

On the night of 30 January 1878, two good trains had a head-on collision. The drivers and firemen of both trains, as well as a guard riding in the cab of the up train, were killed as a result[3].

In 1882, the station was relocated, and the original buildings were abandoned. The current two-storey building was constructed in 1884 when the station moved site and combines both station offices and the Station Master’s residence. Throughout its lifetime, the building has undergone several internal alterations.

The second side platform was built in 1907, coinciding with the duplication of the line from Penrith West.

The overhead pedestrian bridge was built in 1990 and underwent renovations in 2009 to install lifts.[4]

Upgrades[]

From March 2010 to February 2011, a new commuter car park was built as part of the Transport Access Program. The car park includes approximately 275 car spaces, CCTV surveillance and lighting.[5]

In February 2019, the NSW government announced an additional 800 parking spaces will be built in Emu Plains. It will involve the construction of a multi-storey car park north of the station, increasing total parking capacity to 1,500+ spaces.[6] The project is currently in the preliminary investigation phase, and no completion date has been announced.[7]
