Recent news as of 12th September 2020

  • Series 2 Waratahs: (12/09/20) The second batch of Series 2 Waratahs (B sets) are being rolled out onto the network. The first two sets of this batch have so far entered service, B25 and B26.
  • T6 Carlingford line: (05/01/20) The T6 Carlingford line has been closed to passenger traffic. The line will be converted to Light Rail standards as part of the Parramatta Light Rail project.
  • New Intercity Fleet: (23/12/19) The first shipment of EMU's was recently unloaded at Port Kembla, south of Wollongong. The sets are being transported to Eveleigh train yards, where further testing would be carried out.
  • Tangara Technology Upgrade: Sets T72 and T106 (Ex G6) continue to undergo testing with the new upgrades. The pair will continue testing through to mid 2020.

  • Sydney Metro City & Southwest: (20/01/20) Tunneling under the city has now been completed. Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) "Mum Shirl" recently breached the rock at the Barangaroo station site, making it the fourth of five TBMs to complete work for the Sydney Metro. TBM "Kathleen" continues to bore under the harbour for the second metro tunnel. (source)
  • Overall: The Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) consortium has placed an order on 23 Alstom Metropolis sets, costing around €350 million or ~$568 million AUD. This will expand the Metropolis fleet to 45 sets for the upcoming City & Southwest line from Chatswood to Bankstown.
  • Sydney Metro West: Seven stations have been confirmed for the project: Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays Precinct. Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2020.
  • Sydney Metro Northwest: The North West Night Bus has been withdrawn. Passengers should now able use the metro during late hours every day.

  • New! CBD and Southeast Light Rail: The new L3 line from Circular Quay to Juniors Kingsford is now open, with 5 new stops in addition to the existing 14 stops along the L2 line at key destinations in the City and the Randwick LGA.
