Next Generation Intercity Set

Comments0 Share

The Next Generation Intercity Set is a new proposal by the state government to purchase a new fleet of intercity trains to replace the aging V sets and to operate in place of OSCARS, which will be transferred to suburban lines, replacing the last S sets[1]. This project is estimated to cost $2.8 billion and will deliver approximately 520 new carriages. The rollout is expected to start in 2019 and finish in 2024.

In a first for the NSW government, these trains will not be specially designed, instead being bought "off-the-shelf" in an aim to reduce costs and building times.

These trains are expected to[2]:

  • be double-deck trains
  • have rows of two seats in the upper and lower floors, with no rows of three
  • have fixed seating, similar to that of the Tangara
  • possibly have food and drink services
