The Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra railway line (also known as the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line) is a commuter railway line in the eastern and southern suburbs of Sydney, Australia, which is a part of the Sydney Trains network. Along with the South Coast Line, an intercity line that uses the Illawarra Line tracks out of Sydney, the line was constructed in the 1880s to Wollongong to take advantage of agricultural and mining potentials in the Illawarra area. In 1926, it became the first railway in New South Wales to run electric train services.
Today the railway consists of three connected lines: the original Illawarra Line; a branch line from Sutherland to Cronulla (the Cronulla Line), which opened in 1939, replacing an earlier tram service; and an underground rail link between the Sydney CBD and Bondi Junction, the Eastern Suburbs Line, which opened in 1979. The railway currently operates as a relatively high-frequency independent line, and has been noted by the New South Wales Government as the most reliable line in Sydney.
Operationally and historically, the entire line from the Illawarra Junction at Redfern to its terminus in Bomaderry on the South Coast was known as the "Illawarra Line". However, since 1989 Sydney Trains has marketed the suburban services to Waterfall and Cronulla as the "Illawarra line" and interurban services south to Wollongong and Bomaderry as the South Coast Line. The line is coloured an azure blue on Sydney Trains's timetables and other promotional materials.
The line uses the T Set trains and also some H sets (OSCARs) during peak hours).
Eastern Suburbs SectionEdit
The Eastern Suburbs Line (refered to as Illawara Relief on signal numbering) runs between Bondi Junction in Sydney's east and Eveleigh, just south of the Sydney central business district. It is mostly underground, and consists of 7 kilometres (4 mi) of bored tunnels and 1.5 kilometres (1 mi) of cut and cover tunnels, with only 2 kilometres (1 mi) above ground. In the Eastern Suburbs, the tunnels proceed in a northwesterly direction from Bondi Junction under the suburbs of Edgecliff and Kings Cross; with stops in both suburbs. Between Bondi Junction and Edgecliff there is a short open-air cutting in Woollahra, and between Edgecliff and Kings Cross there is a short viaduct over Rushcutters Bay. There is a partially constructed platform in the Woollahra cutting for a planned station, but the station was never completed due to opposition from residents.
From Kings Cross, the line proceeds west towards the Sydney Central Business District on a viaduct that passes over the suburb of Woolloomooloo and the Eastern Distributor. The line then passes into a tunnel underneath the Art Gallery of New South Wales to a station underneath Martin Place. Turning south, the line proceeds through Sydney's Town Hall, Central and Redfern stations, before emerging behind Everleigh Yard at Illawara Junction. The line is double track throughout, with turnback sidings at Martin Place and Bondi Junction for citybound trains, and at Central for trains from Bondi Junction.
Illawarra and Cronulla LinesEdit
The Illawarra Line commences at the Illawarra Junction at Everleigh. Trains at Illawara Junction can either go onto the Illawara Relief track, which continues onto the Eastern Suburbs Line (see above), or continue on the Illawara track. There is also a bidirectional track to enter/exit Everleigh yard. There is then a turnout on the continuing (Illawara) track for trains to crossover to the Main Line and enter Sydney Terminal. The Illawara track continues to the flying junctions at Central, where it merges onto the Illawara Local track and enters the City Circle.
From Illawarra Junction, four tracks (including the East Hills Line and Bankstown Line) lead south through the suburbs of Erskineville and St Peters to Sydenham station, where the Bankstown Line branches off. The line parallels the East Hills Line tracks until the suburb of Wolli Creek. This is where trains stopping all stations will change onto the Illawara Local track to allow express trains to pass. After reaching the suburb of Hurstville, where the line changes back into two tracks, it then continues south towards Sutherland, crossing the Georges River between the suburbs of Oatley and Como. At Sutherland the Cronulla Line branches in an easterly direction until Woolooware where the branch turns south and finishes near the Cronulla shopping area.
The main line then heads in a southerly direction, parallel to the Princes Highway to the west and bordering the Royal National Park on its eastern side until Waterfall, the last suburb in the Sydney metropolitan area. The double colour light signaling system goes as far as Loftus, where at 28.050kms from Central, the signals switch to single colour light system. The line continues south from here as the South Coast Line through the National Park.
The line currently has 33 operating stations. Only three stations or platforms have closed, the two stations on the Royal National Park Branch (the main station, which closed in 1991, and the platform for the Scout's Camp, which closed in 1947), and the station on the Woronora Cemetery branch, which also closed in 1947.
